The salaries of Carney’s cabinet and secretaries of state

When Prime Minister Mark Carney tapped 28 new cabinet ministers and 10 secretaries of state on May 13, he empowered them to take leadership on key files—and with that comes compensation.

Members of Parliament make a base salary of $209,800, with cabinet ministers getting a $99,900 top-up, and their junior counterparts getting an added $74,700. Carney, meanwhile, makes an annual salary of $419,600.

There are a number of other top-ups MPs can access based on whether they serve as parliamentary secretaries, as key members of other parties’ leadership teams, or in committee chair positions. Those bonus totals were also updated as of April, though many of the positions have yet to be filled.
